Industrial design can be defined as the sum of visual and technological decisions made at the point where products produced in series, service, or system interact with the user. At this point, a variety of different concepts such as functionality, perception, manufacturability, materials, and aesthetics come into play, which represents the fundamental education criteria of the design profession. Today, the field of industrial design has expanded to encompass not only tangible three-dimensional products produced in the traditional sense of mass production but also concepts such as experience and service design. An industrial designer plays a significant role in any field that requires production and innovation. From household appliances to furniture, accessory design to interface design, service design to experience design, industrial designers can work in a wide range of areas.
The aim of Marmara University's Industrial Design program is to graduate students who are positive, sensitive, research-oriented, entrepreneurial, innovative, and capable of interdisciplinary teamwork. Among the main objectives are the development of original ideas and products that will make a difference in Turkey and the world for the benefit of society and the integration of design thinking into various fields. Specifically in Turkey, the motivation of the department is driven by the understanding that the added value created by the design of high-quality and valuable products, systems, and services at the national and international levels can only be achieved through design.
